B-17 Commemorative Nose Art Patch, MY BABY

B-17 Commemorative Nose Art Patch, MY BABY

  • $ 14.95

On August 29, 1944, the 15th U.S. Army Air Force unleashed a 500-plane raid against oil and rail targets throughout central Europe. The mission's planners directed the 20th Squadron of the 2nd Bombardment Group to do what they regarded as an easy assignment: attack the Privoser Oil Refinery and associated railroad yards at Moravska Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. This ‘milk run' deteriorated into the bloodiest day in the 2nd Bombardment Group's history: not a single B-17 Flying Fortress bomber returned from the mission. Forty airmen were killed, another 46 spent the rest of the war as POWs, and only four, with the aid of the OSS and anti-German partisans, managed to evade capture and escape to Allied lines. This patch is the first in a series of commemorative "nose art" patches recognizing the sacrifice of so many airmen lost or captured from the 20th Bomb Squadron. The nose art featured in this patch has been revitalized, and in August of 2013, I applied "My Baby II" to a B-52H Stratofortress flown by the 93d Bomb Squadron at Barksdale AFB, LA. It was applied to tail number 61-017, the 307th Vice Wing Commander's named aircraft.

I am the designer and producer of this patch and is not available elsewhere. 100% embroidered, 4.75" tall and wide, heat cut border, Velcro sewn to back, corresponding soft attachment material included, same size as patch. Outstanding quality.
